Sometimes the push for perfection blows up in your face

In the early 50s, the production of brandy spirit was an important part of our business.

The still for producing this spirit was the source of a bit of a blunder for a 17-year-old Joe Babich. New to the task, Joe drained the still without opening the lid first, causing the sides to cave in. Joe, Peter and Josip hatched a plan to use internal water pressure to push it back into shape. The plan worked, popping the sides of the still back out to nearly perfect. However Peter wasn’t happy with near enough, and reckoned a little extra pressure was needed. That ‘little extra’ blew the bottom of the still off its concrete base – and a perfect repair job took a bit longer than planned.
